The result is an exceedingly romantic and soothing environment — the perfect getaway.

Recent Trip Advisor Reviews from Guests

In a word....'MAGICAL'...From the time we checked in, the wine tasting and cheese, INCREDIBLE shower for two, to the time we checked out was 'MAGICAL'....sitting outside looking up at the moon and stars, chatting with other guests added to the magic.

I loved Clipper House Inn! Such a peaceful and adorable place. The décor, inside and out was so enjoyable. And the staff was beyond accommodating. The attention to details was impressive. We were at the Romance. I'm looking forward to seeing the other rooms. I really enjoyed the creativity of the courtyard area but the "armoire kitchen" had to be my favorite piece. I highly recommend Clipper House Inn.

My wife and I stayed two days for our 23rd anniversary. What was most important to us was the chance to relax and enjoy our time with no distractions. We were absolutely delighted from the moment we arrived. Barbara and her staff were kind and attentive. Our cottage was great. Much more personal than a hotel room. We enjoyed strolling through the gardens and a quick walk to the Boardwalk for dinner. We didn't want to leave and we definitely will be back for years to come.

A Family Affair

The Skinner and Hopper families welcome you to come experience our true Texas hospitality and discover why the Clipper House is the #1 rated Inn on Trip Advisor.

The story of the Clipper House Inn and Cottages begins as a true labor of love. In 2005 David Skinner and Kristen Hopper were looking to buy a bed and breakfast and wanted to bring her parents down from Oklahoma to help run the business. While looking at several other properties in the area they kept driving by the property that would eventually become the Clipper House. While the property was an existing bed and breakfast it needed a lot of TLC. No stranger to hard work and a challenge David and Kristen quickly put a contact on the property and on January 6, 2006 they were proud owners of a bed and breakfast.

David a best selling author, internationally known business advisor, professor, winemaker, and classically trained chef was about to add carpenter to his resume.

To ensure the integrity of the restoration David and Kristen decided to do most of the work themselves so that they could retain the original character of the houses. The strategy was to restore as much as possible to keep the ambiance and character of the cottages while upgrading all of the mechanical systems that ensure guest comfort and safety while extending the life of the cottages. Avid world travelers, David and Kristen spent several months searching for just the right antiques and collectables for each of the cottages. The idea to furnish each cottage based on a clipper ship happened on a trip to Galveston with their daughter Makenzie to see the Elisa. They wanted the decoration and theme of the property to reflect the local culture and surroundings as well as their love of the sea and boating.

Barbara and Jerry Hopper arrived in Kemah not long after most of the major restoration had been completed and just in time for the interior finish out. Barbara an avid seamstress got to work on making curtains and drapes, painting cabinets, and helping with the gardens. Barbara and Jerry had previously run a ski lodge in New Mexico and enjoyed the experience of meeting new people and sharing stories of their life and travels. Once you meet Barbara you will realize that she has a real gift of gab and can converse about many different and varied things.

After months of painstaking restoration and remodeling and a lot of effort by all involved the Clipper House Inn was finally ready to open in June of 2006.

Then in September of 2008 after serving guests for only two years Hurricane Ike hit the Clipper House. It was devastating both to the property and the Skinner and Hopper families. By now David and Kristen’s daughter was a familiar face around the Inn. At only five years old she was talking to guests and helping around the property. As a testament to both human strength and 1920’s construction techniques, the Clipper House withstood the storm and was rebuilt with the same loving care as the original restoration.

In March of 2009 the Clipper House reopened.

We invite you to help us write the next chapter in the story of the Clipper House Inn and Cottages.

Gardens & Vineyards

Vineyards

March - October

The Clipper House features several demonstration vineyards planted for Clear Creek Winery. Bud break is usually in March with fruit emerging in May and harvest in late July. The vines are in their 4th leaf and will be going into Clear Creek Wines in 2015.

Flower Gardens

March - November

We grow over thirty different types of flowers on the property from roses to azaleas to seven different types of lilies. Beginning in March and running through late November something is always in bloom. We encourage our guests to take as many pictures of the plants and flowers as you want but please don't pick them.

Aquatic Gardens

Year Round

This year we added an aquatic garden full of edible plants to be featured by our restaurant eculent. We have cattails and lotus plants, watercress and water celery growing year round. You will probably see Claire or Michael picking the plants to be used in that night's dinner service.
